As part of SIT Study Abroad, I am traveling to Iceland for the summer of 2014. The purpose of this blog is to chronicle experiences I have as an American experiencing this unique, innovative island and its culture. The country has held a personal fascination for many years and I am excited and grateful to be traveling here, learning about renewable energy at the University Centre of the Westfjords, discovering the Icelandic language and culture, and doing my own research relevant to today's energy challenges. Some interesting factoids about this place:
-- 85% of the nation's energy comes from renewable sources
-- The Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the world's longest mountain chain, is mostly underwater but comes to the surface in Iceland
-- Only about 1% of the country is covered by trees, the rest by mosses and breathtaking volcanic features
-- Iceland is thought to be the last large island settled by man, around the ninth century
